World Languages and Cultures
Prerequisites: Recommended 1-2 years of French or Spanish prior to enrollment.
This one-semester class will introduce students to the study of Linguistics and to the basic structure, syntax and vocabulary of a variety of Indo-European languages, including Italian, German, and Russian, and non-Indo-European languages including Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic. Students will also be introduced to a variety of world cultures. Each student will conduct an in-depth study of a language and culture of his/her choice. The first 6 weeks unit will cover an overview of world languages, linguistics, and cultures. During the following 9 weeks, each student will conduct an independent study of his/her language and culture of choice. During the final 3 weeks, students will present their language and culture to their classmates.
