World Languages and Cultures Guidelines
Journal. Keep a daily journal of the activities you complete in class. You can keep a written journal in a notebook or as an electronic document, but you must be able to show it to me at any time. At the end of each class, write a 1-2 sentence description of what you accomplished that day. For example:
I studied the Russian alphabet, and learned to pronounce the first 12 letters.
I practiced 20 vocabulary flashcards on Latin verbs.
I memorized a German poem, and can recite it.
I made labels in Italian to stick on my furniture at home.
I made 10 Power Point slides on Chinese modern art.
I found a Welsh song, printed the lyrics with blanks, and filled it in while listening.
I prepared Sushi and served it to Mrs. Eareckson.
I completed my Workbook pp 36-40.
I watched a film with, and then without, subtitles. I wrote 20 words that I could understand when I watched it without subtitles.
Portfolio. Keep a portfolio, on paper and/or electronically, of every project you complete for this class.
Projects. Here are a few examples of projects to complete.
Draw a floor plan of your home. Label all of the rooms and furnishings.
Make a blank copy
Draw a family tree. Label your relation to each family member.
Draw a map of a city where your language is spoken. Label the buildings.
Make a recipe book of your favorite recipes in your target language. Make a list of important food vocabulary.
Prepare a meal and serve it to your family or the class.
Make a fashion magazine. Label the clothing in your target language.
Find an e-pal and record your correspondence.
Write a children’s book to teach basic vocabulary in your target language.
Make a film in your target language.
Write poetry in your target language. Keep it simple: My dog has a blog (which doesn’t actually rhyme, now that I think about it.)
Make a songbook of your favorite songs, with blanks, in your target language.
Prepare a Power Point to teach the class about the interesting cultural aspects of your target language/country.
