2007 Service-Learning Trip to Haiti
In July, 2007, my daughter Anne and I traveled to Matènwa, a rural community in Haiti. We were there on the urging of Moscow educator and radio host, Nancy Casey. Nancy has spent much time in Haiti over the past 10 years, working with community members on a variety of educational and small rural development projects. Anne and I visited Matenwa to learn about Haitian culture, and to see what future role we might play in the community.
Our experiences in Haiti were much more challenging and much more rewarding than I ever could have imagined. Haiti is, without question, the most fascinating place I have ever visited, and I have never felt so warmly embraced by an entire people. I can’t wait to go back.
